However, given the superior wildlife experience, I highly recommend you consider taking a trip to East Africa. This is also the part of the continent where you are most likely to find the best African safari on a budget. Kruger’s combination of well-maintained roads, diverse wildlife, and accommodation options makes it more accessible and affordable compared to other African safari destinations.
2. Masaai Mara National Park, Kenya
A safari in Maasai Mara National Park offers a thrilling experience, especially for those seeking an African budget safari. Known for its vast savannahs and incredible wildlife, the Maasai Mara is famous for the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest and zebras cross from the Serengeti into the Mara each year. What sets the Maasai Mara apart from other African parks is its close proximity to local Maasai villages, allowing visitors to experience the unique culture alongside wildlife. Its dramatic landscape and high concentration of animals make it different from the wide, open plains of parks like Serengeti. 5. Etosha National Park, Namibia
The Etosha pan (salt pan) takes up more than 25% of the park. This pan resembles Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia and stretches for more than 50km in places. That said, Etosha is best known for wildlife and features many excellent waterholes where guests can sit and watch in the evenings. Wildlife is also easy to locate due to the barren landscapes and this really does set Namibia apart from elsewhere. In terms of African budget safaris, the cost of accommodation is what makes them difficult to find but the option below is affordable compared to most other options you might find for Etosha NP.
6. Chobe National Park, Botswana
A safari in Chobe National Park is ideal for those seeking the best African safari on a budget. Known for its impressive elephant population and stunning Chobe River, the park offers unique river-based safaris where you can see hippos, crocodiles, and birds up close. Chobe stands out from other African parks because of its water-focused experiences, allowing visitors to enjoy boat safaris alongside traditional game drives. Unlike landlocked safaris in parks like the Serengeti, Chobe’s combination of waterways and dense wildlife makes for a distinct and immersive safari experience, perfect for travelers looking for diverse ways to explore wildlife.
7. South Luangwa, Zambia
South Luangwa is a very wild and spacious National Park which spans over 9 050km2. Most of the wildlife is concentrated around the Luangwa River and lagoons. There are more than 60 animal species and 400 species of bird. The vegetation also change throughout the year with it being bare during winter (Apr – Oct) and very lush in the summer (Nov – Mar). You can even enjoy a walking safari in the park and there are some African budget safari options to be found. A lot of visitors combine a trip to Victoria Falls with a safari in South Luangwa National Park but it costs a fortune.
