Top 5 Honeymoon Destinations in Africa: Advice from a Tour Leader

When I think of honeymoon destinations in Africa, it’s hard to look past Kenya and Tanzania. This is where you can find a variety of experiences that include wildlife safaris, village tours and white powder sands. If you want privacy, it’s possible to organize a private safari but there is also the option of joining an overland tour on which there is always a nice mix of singles and couples.

But where exactly do I recommend for a honeymoon in Africa?

The Best Destinations for a Honeymoon in Africa

It was common to have honeymoon couples on my overland tours in Africa but I do understand you might want to do your own thing. This is why I suggest you can either join a group tour or perhaps use these Africa honeymoon destinations to arrange your very own private tour or safari.

Now, let’s take a quick look at my suggestions for honeymoon destinations in Africa.

By the way, have you already arranged personal travel insurance for your trip? You will need this to join most tours and I always use World Nomads. It also takes just a few seconds to get a quote on the link below…

5 Trips for a Honeymoon in Africa that You Should Consider

1. Honeymoon in Tanzania: Serengeti & Zanzibar

Tanzania has the variety you might want in a honeymoon destination in Africa. You can go on safari in Serengeti National Park and venture into the magical crater at Ngorongoro. There are opportunities to visit Maasai villages with most tour operators and then of course the white powder sands of Zanzibar to finish off the trip. The last of these destinations is important because travel in Africa can be bumpy and tiring and the beaches on Zanzibar offer the perfect place to unwind at the end of your trip.

2. Namibia Honeymoon: Etosha National Park & Namib Desert Adventure

Etosha National Park is one of the best wildlife safaris that I have ever encountered in Africa. You can see everything from lion and elephant to cheetah and the elusive leopard in Etosha. But I actually believe the highlight of a honeymoon in Namibia are the encounters with the desert and stunning landscapes of Namibia. There is a private 10-day tour below that takes in Etosha and the Namib Desert but if you would like to consider a group tour, I suggest you also check out the group tour below with G Adventures that will take you on a whirlwind 12-day tour of Namibia.

3. Botswana: Chobe National Park & Okavango

Victoria Falls – what an incredible place to start a honeymoon in Africa!! When you cross into Botswana, Chobe National Park is another excellent wildlife safari in Africa and this country is also known for being a land without fences which enables the wildlife to roam free. And then there’s the Okavango where you can take a mokoro (like a canoe) trip into the largest inland delta in the world. This wilderness area is overflowing with wildlife and you can actually stay overnight to really soak in the sights and sounds of the African bush. The first option below is an 8-day group tour of Botswana and the second is a similar itinerary for a private tour of both the Okavango and Chobe National Park.

4. Uganda Honeymoon: Gorilla Trekking & Lake Bunyoni

Trekking to see the mountain gorillas in Uganda is definitely something I describe as a once in a lifetime experience. Uganda is also a great honeymoon destination in Africa and should help expose you to warm locals and the primitive side of the continent. If you just want to book the gorilla trek only, I suggest checking out the private tour below. But please compare the pricing so that you can see the great value on offer when you choose to join a group tour for your honeymoon in Africa.

5. Overland Adventure: Victoria Falls to Cape Town

Traveling from Victoria Falls to Cape Town is one of the best overland tours in Africa. As mentioned, I think this type of tour is a great option for couples who want a little bit of social interaction on their honeymoon in Africa. The tour itself is incredible and includes many wildlife safaris, local villages and spectacular landscapes. It is also great in terms of logistics as you fly into Victoria Falls and depart from Cape Town – both of which are ideal for spending time before and after your honeymoon.
